Born 1 March 1983, better known Magnificent Mary is an Indian Olympic boxer from Manipur. Mary Kom is a 5 time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the 6 world championships. She is the only Indian woman boxer who qualified the 2012 Summer Olympics and winning the bronze medal in the flyweight (51 kg) category. She has also been ranked as No. 4 AIBA World Women’s Ranking Flyweight category. She became the 1st Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea, and the 1st Indian Woman Boxer to win Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Mary Kom -Early life
Kom was born in Kangathei village, Moirang Lamkhai in Churachandpur district of rural Manipur, India. She belongs to a poor family. Kom grew up in humble surroundings where she helped her parents with farm-related chores. In school, she learned athletics initially and later boxing simultaneously. Her father was a wrestler in his younger days.

Mary Kom studied only till 8th standard, and never had a flair for studies. She took part in all types of sports including volleyball, football, and athletics. Before pursuing boxing, she used to work with her father in their fields. Mary was inspired by athlete Dingko Singh who inspired her to switch from athletics to boxing in the year 2000. She started her training at KhumanLampak in Imphal under M. Narjit Singh who was the then Manipur’s state boxing coach. She won 6 Gold medals at the World Amateur Boxing Championship and another at the 2003 Asian Games. She won the Witch Cup in the year 2002 as well.
Mary Kom- career and achievements
Mary got married to her longtime friend early in the year 2005. She gave birth to twins. It was then everyone thought that her career was finished and Kom would never return to boxing. She answered her critics by making a classic come back. She won a silver medal at the 2008 Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in India and a 4th successive gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in China and another gold medal at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam.
In 2010, Kom won the gold medal at the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan, and at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in Barbados, her 5th consecutive gold at the championship. She won gold in the 48 kg class at the Asian Women’s Cup in China in the year 2011.
On 24 September 2012, the Super Fight League announced that Mary Kom will serve as the SFL’s brand ambassador.
On 1 October 2014, she won her first Gold Medal at the Asian Games held at Incheon, South Korea in the flyweight (51 kg).
On 8 November 2017, she clinched an unprecedented 5th gold medal (48 kg) at the ASBC Asian Confederation women’s boxing championships held at Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam.
